Home security is one of the best reasons to do improvements on your home. Your home may not be very secure. For example, if your home is older, it may not have many of the more recent security measures installed. But even new homes are not always built to be effectively secure. If a builder wants to save money while building a home, he can take short cuts that lessen the level of security.
The good news is that with a little home improvement, you can enhance the security of your home. Just because the house you currently live in is not very secure, that does not mean that you have to live in fear and vulnerability. There are some very practical steps you can take to turn your home into a secure haven to protect you and your family.
Consider first the locks on your doors and window. This is often the first and only line of defense that home owners have when it comes to criminals. Unfortunately, the locks that come on many exterior doors are inferior. They can be broken through by a strong robber. And many of them can even be opened with a simple Credit ??>credit card! Try it on your own door: you may find that you no longer even have to use your key, as long as you have a credit card handy.
To make your door locks more effective, remove them and replace them with dead bolts. Deal bolts are much stronger than regular locks, and it is very unlikely that a crook will be able to break through. Just be sure to always leave the key near the dead bolt itself, in case you need to get out quickly. If a fire breaks out in your home, the last thing you need to be doing is running around in the smoke looking for the key.
Window locks are important as well. Check all the windows on your house to see if they are working correctly. You may even want to test them yourself: can you force any of the locked windows open? If you can, then a thief can too. Repair any locks that do not work, and change the weak ones.
Finally, if the builder of your home did not install hard wired smoke detectors, be sure to have those put in. These are much better than the individual smoke detectors that only use battery power, because if one begins beeping, every alarm in the home also begins beeping.
