It's Not Dead, It's Resting

60-Second Earth60-Second Earth | Energy & Sustainability

There are a wide variety of life forms that can come back to life. David Biello reports

More 60-Second Earth

One of the ways the meek may inherit the earth is by cheating death. The microscopic animal known as a water bear can spring back to life?even after being exposed to the vacuum and harsh radiation of space for more than a week.

At least that's what scientists found out when they sent the 1.5-millimeter-long creature into orbit in 2007. Nor are water bears alone. Some insect larvae, rotifers, nematodes and even brine shrimp can be seemingly dead for years, only to be revived by adding water. Sea monkeys indeed.

Then there are the extremophiles. Deinococcus radiodurans may be the toughest. When high levels of ionizing radiation shatter this microorganism?s very DNA?killing it for all intents and purposes?its genetic code repairs itself and the organism comes back to life within hours. These hardy microbes would likely survive any apocalypse we throw at them.

Then there are the higher life forms. With hydrogen sulfide gas, mice can be put into a state of suspended animation that allows them to survive without breathing for up to six hours. This mammalian proof-of-concept offers hope that the technique could someday work with humans. Of course, the big problem with that experiment is finding volunteers.

Computers And Internet | Cloud computing Trends and the ...

Cloud computing has diverted all workload shift. Now the network of computers which constitutes the cloud can handle any amount of data and workload. A company does not have to invest upfront on hardware or software for regular updates.
Post-cloud computing support, the hardware and software demands of most companies decrease. The only thing that the computer should be ready to run is the interface system of the cloud. The cloud?s network takes care of the rest of the things.
Most have already used some sort of cloud computing technology, just that many are not aware of it. Every web-based e-mail service including Yahoo! Mail or Gmail, one has used is part of the cloud computing setup. All email programs are logged in remotely. The software and storage of emails is stored on the service's computer cloud and not on one?s personal system.
Lately cloud computing has proved to be a strong driver of employment growth since it has created thousands of jobs, according to a new study which was conducted recently. Based on the trends, analysts presume that cloud computing has potential for big business opportunities along with new jobs for the professionals.
According to the statistics indicated in the report, 11 cloud computing companies have added 80,000 jobs for the year 2010 which is incredible by any standards. The employment rate was five times than the employment rate of the overall high-tech sector. Additionally, cloud computing companies have projected growth in revenue by $20 billion on an average per year. This growth is a projection for the next five years. With the growth, it is expected that more than 472,000 jobs would be added in the US and abroad in 5 years!
The study also reveals that the boom in mobile computing devices has driven the growth in cloud computing and employment rate. Also, the ?social? trend in online services has propelled the growth in increased use of cloud computing services.
Cloud computing does have a direct impact on the whole business lifecycle since business growth leads to jobs and that is why there is a growing incidence of employment in the sector compared to other industries. Also, analysts believe that the combined growth of mobile computing, social media tools and data management have all grown on the cloud, which is why they attribute continual success of all aspects of information technology if introduced through cloud computing services.

?Cloud Computing and its Advantages with Definite Characteristics
Businesses verify whether they need assistance to deploy a definite infrastructure time and again. Most of the organizations are wary to invest a chunk of income in setting up IT infrastructure. Cloud computing has paved a way for such organizations to hire virtual workers and set up a remote infrastructure which could be accessed from any location in the world. Baltimore21201.Com - The Blog: Who's the Elephant Insurance Guy ...

If you live most anywhere in the mid-Atlantic region, I'll bet you've seen this commercial for Elephant Auto Insurance. In the Baltimore area it seems like it's on every fifteen minutes.

?
? ? ? ? ? ? ??"Easy buddy, there's not much left up there."

The first few times I saw the Elephant spot, I thought, "What an unusual casting choice for a spokesperson." I didn't know who the guy in the commercial was, but he really worked. On camera he provided an unusual combination of sincerity, innocence, and humor.

After a few weeks my curiosity got the best of me.

Let me introduce you to Virginia's own Dave Parker, weatherman, family man, talk radio host, Radford alumnus, and Elephant Auto Insurance front-man. Oh yes, he's a country music DJ, also.

Dave Parker's Bio ?

Dave's fond of the quote, "Like what you do, do what you like!"

Dave is a native of the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. As a graduate of Kempsville High School, Radford University, and additional studies at Mississippi State University, he has spent most of his life in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Many people recognize him as the long-time Chief Meteorologist at WTKR NewsChannel 3, where he worked for almost a decade. Viewers named him the area's Best Weatherman, and he's also picked up awards from the Associated Press in West Virginia and Ohio for his forecasts.

Dave Parker

Dave has also appeared on CNN, The Today Show, The Late Show with David Letterman, and even The Dating Game.

Parker's first book was published in 2001, titled, "History Next Door, Stories of World War II by Hampton Roads Veterans."

After 18 years of television weather, he decided it was time for a change that would allow his family to stay in Virginia, close to extended family.

Having worked in radio since 2006, Dave was given the chance to pursue his love of country music by becoming one of the initial staff at US106.1, WUSH. You can hear him weekdays from 10 -3. He's also on Talk Radio AM790, WNIS. You'll also hear his voice and see his face in local and national commercials. Dave lives in Va. NASA orbiter captures elephant on Mars

NASA / JPL / University of Arizona

A lava flow in Mars' Elysium Planitia region takes on the appearance of an elephant in this picture from the HiRISE camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, captured on March 19 and released April 4.

By Alan Boyle

NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has captured an elephant on Mars ? well, actually, it's an elephant-shaped lava flow in Elysium Planitia on Mars.

The picture provides one more Martian example of the phenomenon known as "pareidolia," in which our eyes and brain can be coaxed to see familiar patterns in unfamiliar settings. Pareidolia is the best explanation for the Face on Mars, the Mermaid on Mars ... and even the Happy Face on Mars.

The Elephant Face on Mars also provides a glimpse of the geological changes that shaped the Red Planet over the course of billions of years.

"Flood lavas cover extensive areas, and were once thought to be emplaced extremely rapidly, like a flood of water," University of Arizona planetary geologist Alfred McEwen, the principal investigator for the orbiter's HiRISE camera, wrote in an image advisory issued on Wednesday.

"Most lava floods on Earth are emplaced over years to decades, and this is probably true for much of the lava on Mars as well," McEwen said. "An elephant can walk away from the slowly advancing flow front. However, there is also evidence for much more rapidly flowing lava on Mars, a true flood of lava. In this instance, maybe this elephant couldn't run away fast enough."

This picture served as today's "Where in the Cosmos" puzzle on the Cosmic Log Facebook page, and it took about an hour for Odies Neel to come up with the full story behind the image. Odies will be getting a pair of 3-D glasses in the mail as a reward ? as will Seth Deitch and Jonce Matilovski, who came close to the mark.

Over the past six years, HiRISE (which stands for the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) has sent back more than 22,000 images of the Martian surface, including 2,444 3-D anaglyph images that should give those red-blue glasses a good workout. Check out the HiRISE website and NASA's Mars exploration portal page for all the pictures.

There's still more to look forward to on the final frontier: Next Thursday, the big event will be Yuri's Night, a space celebration that commemorates the 51st anniversary of Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin's history-making orbital flight as well as the 31st anniversary of the first space shuttle flight.

The marketing director for Yuri's Night, Veronica Ann Zabala-Aliberto, discussed the past, present and future of spaceflight with me on the "Virtually Speaking Science" talk show, which airs on BlogTalkRadio and in the Second Life virtual world. Give a listen to the hourlong podcast, which you can get via BlogTalkRadio or iTunes ? and check out Veronica's screengrab of our avatars sitting together in the Second Life auditorium:

Pedals, gears, and poles: India's makeshift wheelchairs

Thousands of disabled commuters navigate busy streets of New Delhi in wheelchairs that look like bikes, powering themselves with their hands and steering with a metal pole.

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

?At first glance, Su Kumar could be taken for a bicyclist. Pedaling through the snarl of cars, trucks, buses, and donkey carts, he rolls right along with New Delhi?s chaotic traffic. But instead of using his feet, Mr. Kumar, who uses a wheelchair, pedals with his hands. He?s one of thousands of disabled commuters in the capital who navigate the city on wheels.

In a country that has few amenities for those with disabilities, innovation is critical. Kumar?s wheelchair looks like a three-wheeled bike with a bucket seat. He travels about 10 miles to work each day, powering himself with his hands and steering with a metal pole.

Kumar has been unable to walk since he was a child. But he considers himself fortunate. Fifteen years ago, a local charity gave him his wheelchair, which cost more than $100. He says it has made all the difference.

?I can do everything with this wheelchair,? says Kumar with a smile.

Wheelchair users not only navigate Delhi?s tricky streets, they have turned their wheelchairs into makeshift stores, barbershops, and vegetable stalls.
On a sweltering afternoon, a group of jabbering children surrounds a man juggling dripping ice-cream cones amid the honking cars. He moves with ease. It takes an experienced eye to notice that he?s in a wheelchair that is attached to his ice cream cart.
