PR Pros: Traditional Media Still Matters | Business 2 Community

For all the adoration of social media, traditional media still matters. Two eMarketer studies published this year provide insight as to why ? and PR pros should take note.

First, eMarketer found that Canadians preferred traditional media sources such as TV, radio and newspapers, as the preferred source of information when researching purchase decisions. A second study, focused on the United States, found a similar pattern with a twist:? consumers trusted traditional media more, but once they decided to make a purchase, they turned to the web to select a brand.

While the online migration from print to digital formats has been rough for traditional media ? the state of the media landscape does appear to be stabilizing ? and research suggests it still has considerable influence.? For example, of the most read magazines in America, likely candidates remain at the top:

  • Parade Magazine the Sunday paper insert yields a circulation of 33 million readers.
  • USA Weekend, the publication for travelers on Saturdays and Sundays still nets more than 22 million readers.
  • AARP Magazine, which nearly everyone over the age 55 in America will receive one day, has a circulation of 22 million.

My contention from a PR perspective is, more often than not, the mainstream media drives social media. My peers often respond that social media can drive traditional media as well ? and there?s no doubt that is true. ?The infamous Old Spice campaign is a clear example.

Old Spice took a traditional advertisement, turned it into a very creative social media program, which earned so much attention, the traditional media could not help but notice.? It?s worth noting that the additional traditional media coverage in turn, drove more attention across social media. ?In any case, Old Spice is a prefect case for integrated marketing, combining traditional and digital mediums effectively. ?And yes, the Old Spice campaign drove sales.

The challenge is that social media must cross a certain threshold before traditional media sees it as newsworthy.? Sometimes this can be a well-timed (or mistimed) tweet, but usually, it requires far more effort. Case in point: Traditional media drove Twitter?s growth.

Am I arguing that social media isn?t important?? Of course not.? It can be very effective for most companies when properly adopted for the right community.? I believe businesses, indeed most organizations, need both ? and they need to tie them together ? but let?s not forget that traditional media still matters.

Arkansas Football: Razorbacks Start A New Chapter : Sports and ...

You are here: Home / Football / Arkansas Football: Razorbacks Start A New Chapter

Last season was a memorable one for the Razorbacks. They did finish the season third in the SEC West, but behind both LSU and Alabama, the two teams that met in the BCS Championship game. They matched a school record with 11 wins after defeating Kansas State in the Cotton Bowl (29-16) and ended the season ranked fifth in the country. Expectations will be high again this year, despite the dismissal of head coach Bobby Petrino. Be sure to follow the odds and expert picks in college football all season long at Football Free Picks.

Things got sour in a hurry in the offseason however, as head coach Bobby Petrino was dismissed from the team after hiding a relationship with a female employee. The Razorbacks got John L. Smith to replace Petrino in after just a 4.5 month stint with Weber St. Smith was previously a linebacker coach and a special team?s coordinator with Arkansas the previous three years. Paul Petrino returns as the offensive coordinator and Paul Hayes takes over as the new defensive coordinator after spending the last six seasons with Ohio State.

The Razorbacks return a lot of talent with 13 returning starters (seven on offense, six on defense), but this season hinges on how well the program adapts to a new head coach. Bobby Petrino?s play calling will be missed, but don?t expect Arkansas to fall off too much this season.

Offense:

Arkansas returns one of the best quarterbacks in all of college football in Tyler Wilson. What?s impressive about Wilson is that he has set numerous school records and became the first Razorback signal caller to receive 1st team All-SEC honors in his first season as a starter. He finished up the year with a whopping 3,638 yards with 24 touchdowns and just six interceptions. With Wilson behind center, Arkansas averaged 36.8 points/game and 438 yards of total offense. Big things are expected of him coming into his senior year, which has others thinking that this team can still win without Petrino in charge.

It would have been something really spectacular to see had it not been for the injury that sidelined Kniles Davis prior to 2011 season. Davis was coming off a sophomore season where he rushed for 1,322 yards and 13 touchdowns, earning him First Team All-SEC honors in 2010. Had it not been for Kniles? injury, the offense would have been even more potent for the Razorbacks. Dennis Johnson (670 yards, three touchdowns) and RonnieWingo (458 yards, three touchdowns) were solid as fill ins, but will now be used primary as backups with Davis returning in 2012. This should be one of the most improved units on the entire team.

An area on the offensive end where Arkansas may have to rely on some new faces for production is at the receiver position. Jarius Wright, Joe Adams, and Greg Child were all taken in the 4th round of the NFL Draft. There are still some strong players coming back in senior tight end Chris Gragg (42 catches, 518 yards, two touchdowns) and senior wide out Cobi Hamilton (34 catches, 542 yards, four touchdowns). Sophomore Marquel Wade and red-shirt freshman Quinta Funderburke are also expected to make contributions in the new season.

The offensive line had just two starters back last season and struggled early in the year. They did find their footing and made solid progress as the season went on, and should see a welcome improvement as 2012 rolls along. They bring back two of the top linemen in the conference in left guard Alvin Bailey and center Travis Swanson. Right tackle Jason Peacock is also coming back for the Razorbacks. Two highly touted sophomores in guard Mitch Smothers and tackle Brey Cook are expected to fill the other two spots.

Defense:

The Razorbacks have always had problems on the defensive side of the ball, but they have made some welcome strides since giving up just over 31 points/game in 2008. Last year they held opponents to just 22.2 points/game. The biggest issue for Arkansas was in stopping the run, as they allowed 168 yards/game on the ground. Injuries were a major factor in the struggles this unit faced. It will be interesting to see if Haynes can help this group make even more strides in 2012.

Even though it?s hard to replace the production left by 1st team All-SEC defensive end Jake Bequette, they do have six of the top eight defensive linemen back from last season, including starting defensive tackle duo of Bryan Jones and Robert Thomas. There is a chance for the Razorbacks to allow under 4.0 yards/carry for the first time since 2006, but Chris Smith and Trey Flower need to step up.

Middle linebacker is where the Razorbacks may have major problems on the defensive end. They need to find a replacement for Jerry Franklin, who became the first player in school history to lead the team in tackles for four straight seasons. They also lost starting outside linebacker Jerico Nelson and will be moving Ross Rasner to free Safety. While top outside backer Tenarius Wright is returning, there?s no doubt that this is their biggest concern heading into the season.

They also have some holes to fill at secondary, as they must fill the voids left by starting corner Greg Gatson and 3rd Team All-SEC safety Tramain Thomas. They do have some potentially great talents coming back, especially if Rasner can make a smooth transition from linebacker. Sophomore corner Tevon Mitchell should get better as he gets more burn in his second season as a starter and safety Eric Bennett is one of the up-and-coming players at his position in the SEC.

SEC Prediction ? 2nd SEC West

The Razorbacks have a lot of talent and a lot of experience returning, so it?s really too bad that Petrino?s indiscretions could end up overshadowing this season. The good news is that Arkansas gets their two biggest games of the year (Alabama and LSU) at home, and they have a relatively easy non-conference schedule. While there is an outside chance that they compete for the top spot in the SEC West, another third place finish is more likely given their unfortunate circumstances.

Jack Jones is an expert sports handicapper who provides his picks for Betfirms.com. You can read more details about this team in an extended preview.

PST: Sounders nearly steal one from Earthquakes

Man of the Match: The most polarizing player in the league, Steven Lenhart had another love him or hate him night, spending much of the game bouncing off Seattle?s defenders. But when he wasn?t creating confusion for referee Baldomero Toledo, he was creating San Jose?s goals. In the 71st minute, he was the target on a long throw, winning a header that eventually set up Simon Dawkins? opener. Three minutes into extra time, Lenhart ran unmarked onto a corner, redirecting the night?s winner into the right of Michael Gspurning?s net.

Packaged for takeaway:

  • Given the team he started, Sigi Schmid seemed willing to trade points for recuperation, his team having played mid-week in Kansas City. Eddie Johnson, Fredy Montero and Mauro Rosales were out, Seattle starting Sami Ochoa, Cristian Tiffert, and Brad Evans in their slots.
  • The choice was?reminiscent?of Seattle?s U.S. Open Cup visit to San Francisco, where Schmid had to start a second choice team to account for a crowded schedule. And just like at Kezar, San Jose failed to come out and control the game. By the middle of the first half, a weakened Seattle team was playing like the full-strength Sounders.
  • Past the hour mark, it looked like Seattle could get to full time with a draw. Then, chaos off a long throw from the right saw a ball fall to Simon Dawkins, the San Jose midfielder able to get his 12-yard shot through traffic and past Michael Gspurning. It was a pathos-laden turn, given how hard Seattle had worked.
  • Schmid, however, nearly beat San Jose at their own trick. Bringing on Rosales, then Johnson, then Montero, the Sounders had a completely different team at match?s end ? exactly what the Earthquakes usually do to their opponents. Only instead of merely giving teams a different look (as San Jose does), Seattle?s team got a huge quality boost from Sigi?s reserves.
  • Perhaps ironically, it was another throw in (not some supreme feat of skill) that pulled Seattle even, with Victor Bernardez jumping under a throw that, after Sam Cronin tried to clear it, was headed in by Montero. The comeback kids had been beaten at their own game.
  • Or not. Ten minutes later, an errant Seattle header forced Gspurning to push a ball over for a corner. The ensuing kick met an unmarked Lenhart, who buried San Jose?s winner as if he was at practice.
  • If was a bitter way to concede the game, but given the team Schmid started, it?s no more than Seattle should have expected at kickoff. Yet, at full time, Seattle had a point. Whatever Schmid had decided before the game, the circumstances changed. The Sounders were a minute away from a draw, but they couldn?t hold on.
  • For San Jose, they have to feel a bit fortunate they were able to retake the lead, even if they have done comeback seemingly countless times this season. Given Seattle?s selection, a ?best team in the league? (on points) should have managed their way to a comfortable three. Seattle deserves a lot of credit for making things uncomfortable, but San Jose also hadSeatt a part in the close result.

God Has a Sense of Humor ? Either That or Everything I Think I Know

?

My mother always told me God has a sense of humor.? I believe her.

Growing up, I was terribly shy.? Perhaps because I felt so uncomfortable speaking, I turned to writing.? There, in the safety of my Hello Kitty journal, I could express my innermost fears, my hurts, and also my dreams and loves and cherished memories.

As I grew up, I continued to write.? I wrote for my high school newspaper and became copywriter for my high school yearbook, and when I went off to college I submitted poetry to my college?s paper.? While still an undergrad, I worked my way up from staff writer to editor in chief of a local indie newspaper and also began interviewing musicians for national magazines.? After college, I entered the world of book publishing, where to this day I blissfully sit in silence, getting paid to read for a living.? It?s the perfect job for an introvert.

Although I love editing and working with other authors and editors and designers, I always dreamed of writing my own book, so I?ve continued to work on my own writing.? My weekends are spent at the library or in the bookstore, crafting sentences.? I try to pour my heart out with the same abandon as I did when I was writing in the privacy of my little journal with the lock on it when I was a child, except now I?m working toward having people actually read my work.? I revise, I get feedback, I pitch, I query.? ?And I get silence.? It feels like I rarely hear back from acquiring editors.? Writing is what I?m supposed to be good at.? It?s what I?ve always been told I?m good at.? And yet I have a hard time placing my writing in publications.

Instead, the skill I grew up thinking was my weakest is the one being called into action.? I don?t go out trying to book readings, but time and time again, I?m called upon to give readings and to teach.? It?s public speaking in all its knee-shaking glory.

I?m immensely thankful for these opportunities, and they?ve all gone pleasantly well, but I have to laugh that I seem to get more speaking engagements than publishing credits.

* * *

As I was writing this very post a few days ago, I got a message from poet and musician RA Araya asking me to read a poem in Greek at Sunday?s reading.? Talk about irony!? The memoir I?ve been writing deals with my conflicted Greek identity and the fact that I don?t speak Greek.? Now, as I was writing about laughing over the fact that I?m having to overcome my introverted tendencies to give readings, I?m asked to read in the very language I don?t speak.

But you know what?? I said yes.

Maybe I?ll crash and burn and make a fool of myself, but at least I?ll have tried.? Eleanor Roosevelt once said:

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Life is too short to be scared of anything.? Living means growing, and the best way to grow it to try new things.? Challenging yourself can lead to rewards.? I believe people surprise themselves and rise to occasions.? I?ve also learned that people want you to succeed and that literary crowds tends to be rather supportive.

I?m actually excited about this opportunity.? It?s a great way to promote the beauty of the Greek language and culture during Greece?s economic crisis, and I?m thinking I may read something in an archaic Greek dialect (I studied Classical Greek at Pomona College), a dead language, to further bring awareness to endangered languages.

If you?re in New York, stop by.? I can?t promise perfection, but we will have fun!!? Here?s the info:::

August 12, 2012.? 5:00-9:00pm.? The Sidewalk Cafe (94 Avenue A).? New York, NY.? Stephanie will be reading from?Burning Furiously Beautiful: The True Story of Jack Kerouac?s On the Road, as part of?RA?s Music Poetry Jam Celebration.? flashbackpuppy, Patricia Spears Jones, Sparrow, Puma Perl, Kate Levin, Sarah Sarai, Foamola, Virdell Williams, and Steve will also be taking the stage.? Free, but there?s a one-drink minimum.

Now? what to wear?

?

Also!? Save the date::: September 3 I?m giving a reading that I?m beyond excited about.? Details to come soon.

?

Do you ever find that the very skill you least like using or think is your weakest is the one you need to rely on the most?? What do you think of Eleanor Roosevelt?s advice to push yourself to do the things that scare you?
